This is honestly one of my favorite go-to natural hair styles because it gives low maintenance and long wear at the same time. I’m talking: cornrows in the front (sometimes with a cute zigzag pattern), and my curls out in the back. It’s one of those looks that feels “done” even when I’m not trying to do the most 😅

The best part? It works on so many textures, but I especially love it on type 4 natural hair because it keeps the front neat while letting the back stay soft and full. The only real downside is the parting… because parting the front can take me longer than the actual braiding 😭

I keep it simple: something moisturizing so the hair stays soft, and something with a little hold so the parts stay clean and the braid doesn’t unravel. The goal is control, not crunch.

4) Decide how long you need it to last
If I’m “braiding my 4C hair for the week,” I’m doing slightly bigger, simpler cornrows so I can take them down easily and not stress my edges. If I want it to last longer, I’ll take more time on smaller sections.

How I part the front (without losing my mind)

Parting is the make-or-break for this style, especially if you want that zigzag look. And yes, it can take forever at first.

Here’s what helps me:

• Work with damp hair so it’s easier to separate cleanly.

• Use clips to keep sections out of the way. If I don’t clip, I end up mixing hair from different rows and then I’m mad at myself later.

• Start with fewer braids if you’re new. A “6 braids cornrow style” is such a good beginner-friendly option because it’s not too many parts, but it still looks super cute and intentional.

• Zigzag tip: I lightly map the zigzag first, then go back and sharpen it. If I try to make it perfect in one go, I overthink it and it gets worse.

This part matters. Too loose and it won’t last. Too tight and your scalp will be screaming. I aim for “secure,” not “painful.”

Step 6: When you reach the end, finish with a regular braid

My favorite versions of this look

I rotate between a few variations depending on my mood and how much time I have.

1) Cornrows in the front, curly hair in the back

This is the classic for me. The front stays neat, the back stays soft. If my curls are popping, this style looks like I tried way harder than I did.

If you want your cornrows to last and still look good day 4, day 5, day 7, this is what helps me:

A scarf or bonnet makes a huge difference. When I skip this, my roots get fuzzy fast.

• Keep the scalp comfortable
If your scalp gets dry, a little oil (not too much) can help. If it gets itchy, I focus on keeping buildup low and not layering heavy products.

• Don’t over-style the edges
I try not to slick my edges every single day. I want the style to be protective, not stressful.

• Refresh the curly back separately
If you’re doing the curly hair in the back, treat it like its own mini style. I refresh it more often than the braided part.

Short natural hair cornrows: what I wish I knew earlier

Cornrowing short natural hair can feel harder because there’s less length to grip, and shrinkage makes everything feel smaller than it is. A few things that helped me:

• Smaller sections are easier to control when the hair is short, but don’t go so small that you’re braiding all night.

• Anchor with a few braid stitches first before you start adding hair to the row.

• Take breaks because your hands will get tired, and tired hands lead to messy parts and random tension.

• Practice on “hidden” styles (like when it’s going under a wig). That’s honestly how I got more confident because I wasn’t pressuring myself to be perfect.
